Brief History of HMC

HMC was established as a joint venture between Mr. Jung Ju-young and the US car company Ford. A year after its establishment. Cortina, the very first car of Hyundai Motors was released in 1968. Having no its proprietary car-making technology, Hyundai brought in George Turnbull, the vice president of the British Leyland. The company produced its first proprietary model 'Pony' based on the technical cooperation from Japanese company Mitsubishi Co. It became the first model to be exported to Canada, but not to the US for failing to meet the emissions standards. But Excel, the following model was launched in the US market. HMC bought KIA and Asia Motors in 1993. HMC used to belong to the Hyundai Group, but along with other 9 subsidiaries, it made Hyundai Motor Company Group, headed by Mr. Jung Mong-gu. After 2000, the OEM successfully launched models like Avante, Sonata, and Grandeur, which made the car company number 1 in the domestic market. Unfortunately, it could not build a proper reputation in the overseas market. The cars of HMC used to be considered as cheap cars with poor performance. However, with the continuous efforts to improve the product quality and develop new and better models, Hyundai's cars are now recognized as safe cars with good quality. Now that the era of electronic cars and self-driving vehicles begins, it tries to set its foot in these new markets.
